( votes)Should Kyrie Irving Leave Cleveland Cavaliers?
Point guard Kyrie Irving was taken with the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. When Cleveland selected him there were questions about his health, but his potential was undeniable. Irving has since lived up to that potential, becoming one of the best point guards in the NBA with his deadly combination of speed to get to the basket and precision jump shooting. But with reports surfacing that he wants to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers, the question now is should he leave?
Cleveland Cavaliers His Best Hope
As it stands right now, there are only a couple of teams in the NBA with a decent chance at winning the NBA Finals over the next few seasons and, right now, the Cleveland Cavaliers are one of those teams. What this means is that it would be silly for Irving to ditch the Cavaliers to join another team, for a couple of reasons that all come together to make his current situation his best hope at winning an NBA title.
A massive reason that Irving shouldn’t switch teams is that the two teams you could consider more likely to win the NBA Finals both have better point guards than Irving. The Golden State Warriors have Steph Curry, who isn’t just the best point guard in the NBA, but the best overall player in the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs, meanwhile, have Tony Parker, who is one of the most experienced and clutch point guards in league history. Having to share playing time with those two players would be foolish for Irving, and going to a worse team would be even more foolish.
The other reason that Kyrie Irving should stay put is that he is currently aligned with LeBron James, the one player capable of absorbing blame that should probably be assessed to Irving when the Cleveland Cavaliers fall short. In his current team, Kyrie Irving gets credit when he plays well, but doesn’t receive blame when the Cavs fail to win the championship, which is a huge plus.
Kyrie Irving’s Next Move
Kyrie Irving has denied that he wants to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers despite reports that he wants to part ways with the team. This could very well shake the trust his teammates and the Cavaliers organization have in Irving, which makes his next move very important if he wants to ensure that everything goes smoothly for him for the duration of his time in Cleveland, no matter how long that time might be.
For Kyrie Irving, the smart move would be to sit down with his teammates and with Cavaliers management and to make it clear what his intentions are and what he wants his future to be. That way, whether he wants to stay with Cleveland or not, he isn’t surprising anyone and everybody is on the same page. This also allows the organization to plan for their future accordingly, which would be the right thing to do in any professional setting, the NBA included.
