“The BIG RACE this Saturday is the Hennessy Gold Cup, one of the top Handicap Chases of the season, always eagerly awaited. The race is over 3 miles, 1 Furlong and 214 yards, that is 3 and a quarter miles or 26 Furlongs in plain English, a real stamina test and likely to be run on Soft Ground, with rain expected this afternoon and overnight, and lets not forget this will be the penultimate race of around 20 over 3 days of racing, so the words, field and ploughed; spring to mind! The race is invariably won by a Class horse, most often a progressive Chaser or on occasions a top Class horse back in form after a dip who gets in off a nice handicap mark. The top 2 in the betting market Saphir Du Rheu and Bobs Worth perfectly fit those criteria respectively but with 7/2 about Saphir and 6/1 about Bobs Worth, we feel duty bound to look elsewhere. We have highlighted 6 of the remaining 16 horses, who we feel represent the best value in the field, at the likely odds. They are Houblon Des Obeaux; Fox Appeal; The Young Master; If In Doubt; Ned Stark and Theatre Guide. Whittling those down to just 2 has been VERY DIFFICULT but we have to bin If In Doubt purely on the basis that it is its seasonal debut and you would have to have the horse 100% spot on in this company; next to go was Theatre Guide, incredibly well handicapped and excuses for 2014 with the yard under a cloud but not quite compelling enough in this class of race. That leaves us with 4 to choose from and Fox Appeal is reluctantly left out, the price is incredible value and it could run a whopper at those odds but on the basis of possibility over probability, it will finish just out of a place, the last for the chop is Ned Stark, and this was incredibly marginal, as it ticks so many trend boxes, the deciding factor is just the ability over this trip at this stage of its Chasing career. So that leaves us with HOUBLON DEX OBEAUX at 14/1 and THE YOUNG MASTER at 9/1, why???, well as quirky and inconsistent as it can be the record of HDO in this race is very impressive, it is an Autumn horse and the Trainer is an Autumn Trainer. The Young Master is very progressive and the ability to front run and the ability of the jockey to dictate the pace is very appealing, as if it gets this right, as horse and jockey have done in the past, it could have them strung out all over Berkshire! IF YOU want the security of a win bet on the Nicholls horse, find some 4/1 and have a point win as a Banker to cover the 2 x 1 point each way bets, personally I won’t be doing that but I know it will suit some strategies).”
