Liverpool host Chelsea in the early kick off tomorrow (Saturday) as they look to put their Champions League woes behind them. With 3 defeats from 4 in the Champions League, they are up against it to qualify, although it is still certainly possible. Brendan Rogers rested several key players in the trip to the Bernabeu, with this game obviously in mind. Chelsea are already 12 points ahead of their hosts going in to this game, and Mourinho knows 3 points would really put them in control at the top of the table. Last season, these sides finished 2nd and 3rd, with the decisive game for Liverpool being their 2-0 defeat here against Chelsea at the end of last season.
Liverpool lost Suarez over the summer, and the injury to Sturridge means they are missing the firepower that made them a real threat last season for this game, and with a leaky defence, Chelsea will smell blood and are more than capable of getting all three points. However, the visitors struggled in Maribor (albeit a 91st minute Hazard penalty would’ve got them all three points), so they will need to up their game in what will undoubtedly be one of the games of the season so far.
Chelsea have won all but 2 games this season, both in the north west, and in both games they were winning 1-0 until late on. Man City and Man United pulled them back in the 85th and 94th minute respectively, so maybe this is something Liverpool will look to capitalize on – the fact that Chelsea can be vulnerable late on.
Gerrard, Sterling and Henderson should all start after being rested in midweek for Liverpool, whilst Chelsea will likely welcome back Oscar, Diego Costa, Courtois and Gary Cahill after they were rested. Both sides are strong, but with Liverpool missing a real striking threat (Balotelli and Lambert not yet impressing), will we see a Chelsea win, or can the Kop help spur on the hosts? One thing is for sure, Liverpool v Chelsea should be a great game
