Sandown Racecourse

Sandown Racecourse is a right handed track with uphill gradients, it is a dual purpose venue holding both flat and jump racing and they have both afternoon and evening meetings. It has been assigned as a grade two course despite holding a group one race, the “Coral Eclipse”, this is the race where we first get to see the clash of the generations (three years old versus older horses) over ten furlongs in the UK at the highest level. There are twelve additional pattern races that are run during the course of the season, with one group two race, eight group three races and finally three listed events.

The draw can play an important part in the outcome of races run round here, where on fast ground I tend to favour low drawn horses, especially in races over five furlongs and if tending to race prominently. Where it can change is when the ground is riding on the slow side or soft, where its not uncommon to see jockeys either ride down the middle of the track in the home straight or come to the near side rail, both depending on where the better ground is, although that decision is sometimes subjective.
