Kyle Anderson Shines
Drafted with the number thirty overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Kyle Anderson justified not only that selection, but his claim to a roster spot when the regular season rolls around with his performance in this year’s Summer League. Anderson was named this year’s Summer League Most Valuable Player, and chipped in 15 points in the Spurs’ championship game win over the Suns. For the entire tournament, he averaged 21 points per game and shot 45% from the field, marks that led to Anderson being named to the Summer League’s all-tournament team.
Throughout this tournament, Anderson used his dynamic ability to get to the rim to beat defenses for his own scoring while simultaneously forcing extra defensive rotations that freed up his teammates. With Cory Joseph and Marco Belinelli both gone from last year’s Spurs team, Anderson definitely has an opportunity to create a defined role for himself this year. With a performance like this in the Summer League, he’s off to a good start, and basketball tipsters may want to get to know him quickly.
Hammon Makes History
Becky Hammon was the head coach of this Spurs team, which was notable for several reasons. The first reason is that Hammon is a tremendous coach, while the second is that she is the first female head coach of a Summer League team. And thanks to her quality coaching and the execution provided by her players, she also became the first female to coach a team to a Summer League title.
Hammon currently serves as an assistant coach for the Spurs during the regular NBA campaign as a member of head coach Gregg Popovich’s staff. It’s clear, though, that Hammon is destined for much more than a future as an assistant coach in the NBA. The only question is which team will have the courage and intelligence to hire Hammon to become the first full-time female head coach in NBA history. One would think that some of the league’s more dysfunctional franchises, such as the New York Knicks, would be lucky to have her at this very moment let alone in the future.
Best Summer Ever
The San Antonio Spurs were considered one of the big winners of the NBA’s free agency period, signing star forward LaMarcus Aldridge and adding solid role player David West at a significant discount. Those important signings along with positive signs from their young players in the Summer League prove that the Spurs will be fine long beyond the point at which Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker retire, thanks to a culture that realizes that the name on the front of each jersey is more important than the name on the back.]]>
