Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson still has ‘dream’ of playing NFL and baseball at the same time!
Russell Wilson says he is still open to a career in both NFL and baseball and that people should not be surprised whatever he decides. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback spoke about the possibility and said: “I never want to kill the dream of playing two sports. I would honestly play two sports.” When asked what would stop him from fulfilling his ambition Wilson said: “I don’t know, I may push the envelope a little bit one of these days.People don’t realize how much you have to travel and how much you have to continually mentally grind,” says Wilson, who played two summers in the minor leagues. “I think that’s the thing that’s helped me in football, too. The idea of staying focused on one pitch at a time, one play at a time. And also having amnesia. You have to forget about the pitch before, the inning before your last at-bat. You have to have that type of mentality. When you can do that and relax and stay focused on the moment, the better off you are.”Wilson would not be the only man to combine the two sports in the modern era. Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders were successful dual sport athletes but Wilson may find the challenge more difficult. While Jackson and Sanders played at running back and cornerback respectively, the demands of the quarterback position would make it hard for Wilson to miss significant time in the off-season playing baseball. Added to that, Jackson and Sanders were better baseball players than Wilson. Wilson played second base in college, and spent 2010 and 2011 in the Colorado Rockies’ farm system after being drafted in the fourth round. Wilson hit .229 and nine home runs in 93 minor league games. The Texas Rangers currently hold his rights and he has spent a day with the team during spring training for the last two years.
A top NFL Tipster has a fun thought: Russell Wilson is headed into a contract year and there have been rumblings of the Seahawks not wanting to get something done before the season. That and the lack of money he’s received should be the reason for playing baseball. Or maybe baseball could be a reason for the Seahawks to hurry up and get a deal done with Wilson and even if it’s probably too late for Russell to join MLB for 2015, of course, the Rangers could actually use his help this year, though.
