Tipperary Racecourse

Tipperary Racecourse is a sharp, flat left handed track. There is around a two and a half furlong run in  from the final bend to the winning post. It is a dual purpose course which accommodates both flat and Jump racing and is listed as a grade two course in stature.

This oval circuit is about a mile and a quarter in circumference and there is an extended chute attached to the main course for races starting over the minimum trip of five furlongs. Races taking place over fourteen furlongs also starts on part of the chute, at a point where it is joined to the main course.

They host about nine flat meetings a year (It can vary slightly year to year) which commences from April to October.

There are five flat pattern race per season, two of which are group three in status, they are the Coolmore Stud Home of Champions Concorde Stakes which is open to three years olds and older horses and is run over seven and a half furlongs in the month of October.

The other group three race is the Coolmore Stud Fairy Bridge Stakes which is open to filly and mares and is also run over seven and a half furlongs but takes place in the month of August.

It is not surprising that these races are sponsored by Coolmore as their training establishment is based in Tipperary. The remaining pattern races, of which there are three, are all listed class in status.

The draw can be an advantage in races over the five furlong course when there is a large field, (twelve or more runners) often favouring those drawn low and this can become more prevalent when the ground is riding slow, anything from yielding to heavy.

However, on the round course, time has shown that those drawn high can hold an advantage, especially if holding a decent position and not racing too far back.
